On a south or west facing patio that difference shows within a single season. Ask for the manufacturer light fastness rating and treat anything under fifteen hundred hours as an interior fabric.

Foam and fill decide how the cushion ages

• Reticulated dry fast foam lets water pass straight through instead of holding it. Standard upholstery foam in an outdoor cushion becomes a sponge.
• Polyester wrap softens the edge but must be the outdoor grade fiber that will not mildew.
• Drainage grommets in the deck of the cushion are not optional on uncovered seating.

Construction details worth specifying

Use outdoor rated thread. Standard polyester thread degrades in sunlight faster than the fabric it holds together, and a cushion with sound fabric and failed seams is still a failed cushion. Specify zippers in marine grade nylon, not metal, which corrodes and stains light fabric. Self welt reads cleaner outdoors than contrast welt because dirt collects on the cord line.

Plan for storage from the beginning

Even the best outdoor program lasts longer with a winter plan. Build in a storage bench or specify a deck box during design so the client is not stacking cushions in a garage corner in October.
