Blackout or Room Darkening: Getting Bedroom Light Control Right

A client who says they want a dark bedroom is describing an outcome, not a product. Two rooms specified with the same blackout fabric can perform completely differently depending on how the treatment is built and mounted. Light does not care what the fabric label says. It finds the gap.

    What the terms actually mean

Room darkening fabric blocks most light but transmits a soft glow. Blackout fabric, typically a three pass coated cloth or a fabric with an opaque liner, blocks essentially all light through the face of the panel. Neither term describes what happens at the perimeter, and the perimeter is where clients notice failure.

Where the light actually gets in

    • Side gaps. An inside mount shade leaves a light channel on both edges. An outside mount with generous overlap does not.
    • The top. Light spills over an exposed head rail. A pocket, a cornice, or a fascia solves it.
    • The bottom. A shade that stops short of the sill glows along the base.
    • Between panels. Drapery needs a center overlap and a return to the wall to close the box.

The layered approach that actually delivers darkness

For a true blackout bedroom, specify a blackout roller or roman shade in the opening with side channels or a generous outside mount, then layer interlined blackout drapery on a rod that returns to the wall. The shade handles the field, the drapery handles the perimeter, and the room reads dark at ten in the morning.

    Set expectations in writing

If the client is getting an inside mount for aesthetic reasons, document that a light gap is inherent to that mount. Nearly every blackout complaint traces back to an expectation that was never discussed.

    Frequently asked questions

Does blackout lining make drapery stiff? A three pass coated lining adds body. An interlined construction with a separate blackout layer drapes far better.

Can woven wood shades be blacked out? Only with a blackout liner, and even then the perimeter needs help from drapery or side channels.

Is motorization worth it in a bedroom? For high or hard to reach windows, yes. Rechargeable battery motors avoid an electrical rough in.
