The capacity did not vanish, it was reserved in August by designers who thought two seasons ahead.
Why the fourth quarter compresses
Three forces stack. Client demand concentrates around holiday entertaining. Mill and vendor lead times extend as the entire industry orders at once. And the working calendar shrinks, because Thanksgiving week and the last two weeks of December remove most installation days. A twelve week runway on paper becomes closer to nine usable weeks.
The dates that matter
- Mid August: reserve workroom capacity for November installs, even without final fabric.
- Early September: place fabric orders for anything needed before Thanksgiving.
- Late September: complete final measures for November installs.
- Mid October: last realistic window for a standard drapery program to land before Thanksgiving.
- Early November: cutoff for December installs on most custom work.
Reserve capacity before you have every answer
A production slot can be held on a confirmed project with approximate scope. Fabric selection, hardware finish, and trim can follow. Waiting until every decision is final in order to place an order is what pushes projects past the date the client actually cares about.
What to do when the timeline is already tight
Phase the work. Install the treatments in the rooms guests will see, and schedule secondary bedrooms and offices for January. A complete living room and dining room in November is a success. A whole house half finished is not.
