Motorization Became the Default: Specifying Smart Shades in 2026

Two years ago motorization was a line item designers presented cautiously, usually near the end of a proposal. In 2026 it arrives at the start of the conversation. Clients ask for it before they ask about fabric. Builders rough in power at framing. Architects reserve pocket depth for it in the ceiling detail. The specification question has shifted from whether to motorize to how to motorize without creating problems at install.

That shift matters for trade partners because motorization failures are rarely fabrication failures. The panel is right. The shade is square. The problem is almost always power, control, or coordination between three trades who never spoke to one another.

Decide the power path before the order, not after

Rechargeable lithium motors have become the practical default for retrofit work and for windows where no electrician is scheduled. They install quickly, they charge with a plug or a solar strip, and they eliminate the wall box conversation entirely. The trade off is maintenance. Someone has to recharge them, and on a wall of twelve shades that responsibility eventually lands on the designer.

Hardwired motors remain the correct choice for new construction, for high or inaccessible windows, and for any project where the client expects the treatment to behave like architecture rather than like a device. The requirement is coordination. Low voltage needs to be pulled to the head of the opening before drywall, and the location has to be documented on the shade schedule so the electrician does not center it where the bracket lands.

Control is where projects go sideways

Remotes are the simplest layer and still the most common. Specify quantity per room rather than per shade, and confirm whether the client wants a wall cradle so the remote has a home. Groups should be defined at order time so the shades arrive already channeled the way the client will actually use them.

Integration into a larger home system is a separate decision with a separate lead time. If the project involves a control system installer, that installer needs the motor protocol before the order is placed. Retrofitting a bridge or gateway after the shades are hanging is possible, but it is a second appointment and a second invoice that no one budgeted.

    Interoperability has quietly improved

The most useful development of the last two seasons has been broader support for common smart home standards across motor manufacturers. Clients who previously needed a proprietary hub can now bring shades into the same app that runs their lighting. That convenience creates a new expectation, which is that everything simply works together. Set that expectation carefully. Standards support varies by motor line, not by brand, and the answer belongs on the specification sheet rather than in a verbal assurance.

    What to send the workroom

A motorized order needs more than width and length. Include mount type, motor type, power source, control method, group assignments, remote quantity, and the direction of the roll or the stack. For drapery on motorized track, include the master carrier side and whether the panels split or travel one way. Every one of those fields is a decision someone will make with or without you, and the workroom would rather it be you.

    The honest sales position

Motorization sells itself on convenience, but it holds up on the details clients notice later. Uniform stack across a wall of openings. Quiet operation in a bedroom. Fabric that stays square because no one is tugging a cord. Those are fabrication and hardware outcomes, and they are the reason a motorized specification is worth the extra coordination it requires.

Roseworks Fabrication builds motorized roman shades, roller shades, and drapery on track for trade partners across Colorado. Bring us the opening conditions early and we will help you write a schedule the electrician and the control installer can both follow.
