Motorized Shade Pricing and Options: What to Quote Before You Sell It
Motorization has moved from luxury upgrade to baseline expectation on Front Range projects, especially on tall windows and window walls where manual operation is impractical. The trouble is that motorized quotes vary widely for reasons clients cannot see. Almost all of that variance comes from four decisions made before fabrication.
Power source is the first fork in the road
Rechargeable lithium motors install without an electrician, which keeps a retrofit clean and predictable. Expect to recharge every six to twelve months depending on cycle count and shade weight. Hardwired motors never need charging and are correct for high or inaccessible openings, but they require rough in coordinated before drywall. A hardwired motor discovered late becomes a change order for the client and a delay for the workroom.
Control layer sets both price and experience
- Handheld remote is the least expensive and works well for a single room.
- Wall mounted keypad reads as architectural and never gets lost in a sofa.
- Hub with app and voice adds scheduling, scene control, and integration, and is the right call on whole home programs.
- Third party control integration requires the integrator on the project before hardware is ordered.
Treatment type changes the hardware, not just the motor
A motorized roller shade, a motorized roman shade, and motorized ripplefold drapery use different mechanisms. Roller shades carry the motor inside the tube. Roman shades need a lift system rated for the finished weight, which is why fabric and lining choice affect the motor spec. Ripplefold drapery runs on a track with a belt or cord drive and requires careful stack calculation so the panel clears the glass.
Quantity is where the budget conversation gets easier
Per opening cost drops as the program grows because the control layer is shared. Motorizing three windows in one room usually costs less per window than motorizing one window in three rooms. Group by room and by function when presenting options, and give the client a phased path if the full program exceeds the budget.
Frequently asked questions
Should I quote rechargeable or hardwired? Rechargeable for retrofits and reachable openings. Hardwired for new construction, tall glass, and anything above ten feet.
Do motorized shades work with Alexa or Google Home? Yes, through a hub. Confirm the hub before ordering, since not every motor family supports every platform.
How long do the batteries last? Six to twelve months of normal use on most rechargeable motors. Heavier shades cycle down faster.
Can existing shades be motorized later? Sometimes, but retrofitting is rarely cheaper than specifying it correctly the first time.
Send your openings, ceiling heights, and control preference and we will return a motorized specification and estimate you can present with confidence.
