What to Look for in a Custom Drapery Workroom Partner

    Roseworks Fabrication··3 min read

Your fabrication workroom is one of the most important vendor relationships in your design practice. The right partner makes you look exceptional to your clients. The wrong one creates stress, delays, and quality issues that reflect on you, not on them.

Whether you are a designer establishing your first trade fabrication relationship or evaluating whether it is time to switch, this checklist covers the criteria that matter most.

    Quality and Craftsmanship

Start with the product itself. Ask to see samples of finished work. Look at stitch quality, header construction, hem finishing, and how the fabric hangs. If possible, visit the workroom and see production in progress.

    Questions to ask:

    • Can I see samples of completed drapery, roman shades, and cornices?
    • What is your quality inspection process before delivery?
    • How do you handle items that do not pass inspection?
    • Can I visit the workroom during production?

At Roseworks, every finished piece goes through a multi-point inspection before leaving our workroom. We encourage trade partners to visit and see our process firsthand.

    Communication and Responsiveness

The best workroom in the world is frustrating to work with if you cannot get answers when you need them. Evaluate how the workroom communicates during the sales process, because that is how they will communicate during production.

    Questions to ask:

    • Who is my primary point of contact?
    • Can I reach them directly by phone or email?
    • How are production updates communicated?
    • What is your response time for specification questions?

We provide proactive production updates and direct access to the people building your order. When you contact Roseworks, you are not entering a queue.

    Capacity and Timelines

Understand the workroom's capacity relative to your project volume. A workroom that is perfect for single-room orders may struggle with a whole-home project, and vice versa.

    Questions to ask:

    • What is your standard production timeline?
    • How many active orders do you typically have in production?
    • Can you accommodate rush timelines?
    • How do you handle capacity when multiple large orders overlap?

Our standard production runs 4 to 6 weeks. We manage our queue actively to maintain reliable timelines and communicate proactively if anything shifts.

    COM and Fabric Handling

If you work with COM (Customer's Own Material), understand the workroom's receiving and inspection process. Fabric handling errors are among the most costly mistakes in custom fabrication.

    Questions to ask:

    • What is your COM receiving and inspection process?
    • How do you handle fabric that arrives damaged or with insufficient yardage?
    • Do you calculate yardage or do I need to provide that?
    • Where do I ship COM?

For detailed COM guidance, see: COM Fabrication: What Designers Need to Know.

    Trade Support and Pricing

A workroom that serves the trade should operate like a trade partner, not a retail store. Pricing should be transparent. Specifications should be confirmed in writing. The relationship should feel collaborative, not transactional.

    Questions to ask:

    • Is your pricing transparent and provided in writing?
    • Do you confirm all specifications before production?
    • Do you support designers with fabric sourcing guidance?
    • Can you work from my specifications or do you require your own templates?

    Location and Delivery

A local workroom offers logistical advantages: easier communication, the ability to visit, and simpler delivery coordination. But location alone is not enough. The workroom needs to deliver reliably to your project sites.

    Questions to ask:

    • Where is your workroom located?
    • Do you deliver to my project area?
    • Do you coordinate with installation teams?
    • Can you ship to out-of-state projects?

Roseworks is located at 12170 Tejon St #300 in Westminster, Colorado. We deliver throughout the Front Range and mountain communities and ship nationwide for out-of-state trade orders.

    Making the Decision

The best workroom relationships are built on trust, consistency, and mutual respect. Visit the workroom. Place a small initial order. Evaluate the product, the communication, and the experience. Then scale the relationship based on results.
